Go to other countries where there is major population and traffic problems and probably 50% of that country’s people won’t drive, because you’d have to be crazy to want to. Now that I learned the highway system and certain confusing intersections and highway ramps, exits, I now am an extremely confident defensive driver!I drove on the highways for 25 years until I had a panic attack on rt 128 in Boston. Learning to confront our driving anxiety is a common theme for successful recovery. I found an interesting article about it here that might give you more insight: There are no specific answers as to why human beings develop phobias, but there are several indicators that suggest a person is more likely to develop them:All human beings have irrational fears. Why the hell would I want to be going 70 miles an hour with all the stupid sheep? A fast paced life style isn’t a happy life style for many people. I never tail gate, I always use turn signals, I never cut anyone off. There’s definitely a confrontational aspect to highway driving, and it’s most intense while trying to navigate your way into the current. Irrational fears become phobias when they significantly disrupt our day-to-day existence. I was on vacation, visiting family, everything very relaxed and out of nowhere it was like my mind was screaming at me to stop the car and getI’m so grateful for your site. I don’t drive anywhere near highways. One common way millions of people overcome their fears is through self-help techniques like Thanks for your comment! My husband tolerates my fear 100%, but if ever came a day that he had enough of it, I would think “too bad leave me then” (and I have a beautiful fairytale marriage.). It’s a friggin racetrack full of BAD drivers and tractor trailers. The high speeds and unsafe drivers in it multiplies your risk of becoming seriously injured or road splattered.I used to drive all over the place and about 6 years ago out of nowhere I started panicking on the freeway.

I still cant understand how it works and how I can stop this fear.I’ve been a driver now for over 22 years (learned to drive when I was 34 y/o), and I’m still extremely nervous especially when I have to drive on highways I’m unfamiliar with. The difference, though, between irrational fear and an actual phobia is that most irrational fear doesn’t have a big impact on our lives. Unsurprisingly, this bad road design has contributed to a lot of vehicle accidents because drivers try to come off the highway and forcing themselves to merge across the 3 lanes. When you’re on a regular roadway – even one with heavy traffic and/or a high speed limit, there are usually frequent opportunities to easily get off of that road, and almost all ‘exits’ are other local roads. I have a highway drive every Friday during rush hour I make [too far for backroad route]…..but I’m going to either start going 3 hours before rush hour or waiting til after! Unfortunately, highways are now a fact of life. And you know what? You’re much safer reducing your use of highways. It happens almost daily.I’m sure, in their heads, they think they’re great drivers. Untreated fear almost always gets worse with time.

Remember folks, highway driving has only been around since like the late 50’s.
