Director Michael Fischa, working from a gleefully ridiculous script by James Bartruff and Mitch Paradise, keeps the enjoyably inane story moving along at a brisk pace, treats the silly premise with gut-busting misguided seriousness, delivers a satisfying smattering of leering gratuitous female nudity, goes delightfully overboard with the excessive explicit splatter, neatly captures the Day-Glo cheesiness of the 80's fitness craze (hot chicks in leotards, leg warmers, strenuous aerobics, and so on), and pulls out the crazy stops at the wild climax in which a Mardi Gras party gets nightmarishly out of hand. Ah, a lot of trash was released in the eighties, and this is a good example of that. After reading the glowing reviews for this film I had to seek it out, especially as it's been compared to Aerobicide (Killer Workout).

4 out of 4 found this helpful. I wonder what the thought process was behind naming the movie this way. It's pretty much an accidental comedy and that's why it is so fun to watch. Death Spa is goofy, often nonsensical, but you can have some fun with it if you're in the right frame of mind particularly if you have an affinity for the eighties and for low budget, trashy horror pictures. However I found that Death Spa was not as good, despite the fact that there's more gore. So, yea, I felt that was problematic, because the movie seems to be trudging along for no real reason whatsoever. To get a one up on other spas, he has implemented a computer system that controls everything, be it the weights, the air conditioning, and the hotness of the water when all those women are showing nude.
Death Spa (1988) Director: Michael Fischa Death Spa is far better than it has any right to be even though it rips off far better movies in the genre. Michael needs to stop the bloodshed before he loses all of his clients. I chose Death Spa for review purely based on its delightfully over-the-top VHS art, but it turned out to be the kind of movie I hope for when I review these cheesy 1980's horror films.
