tested positive for the virus. It has now been 15 days since a death was recorded among people who have tested positive for Covid-19, with the toll remaining at 2491.However, adding deaths where coronavirus has been suspected, the figure stands at 4201.The increase of 30 cases of the virus is the highest jump since June 4, when a rise of 49 was recorded in a day. There are 255 people in hospital with confirmed or suspected Covid-19, down five in the past 24 hours.Of these, four patients are in intensive care, up two from Thursday.First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: “Today is the first time we have seen 30 new cases in a single day in more than eight weeks.“We must pay attention to that and I want to assure you that we are paying close attention to that.”Sturgeon said three of the cases are linked to the cluster outbreak in the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde region. She said: “Based on the information I’ve got on the 30 cases today, we think 12 are associated with care homes, three are associated with the outbreak in Inverclyde, and now we think there’s a total of 13 cases overall associated with that outbreak.”In early June when Scotland last reported more than 30 cases in a day, just over 5000 tests were conducted, the First Minister added. She said on Thursday more than 15,000 tests were carried out.Swinney: Anxiety understandable but schools will be safeCovid positive as part of the Greater Glasgow cluster, bringing the total to 13.The health board confirmed one of the cases had a link to the Sitel call centre in Lanarkshire. The outbreak at the Sitel premises, in Eurocentral business park near Bellshill, was first revealed on July 19, and involved more than 20 cases.Staff at the call centre help to trace contacts of positive Covid-19 cases for NHS England. The positive cases in the Greater Glasgow cluster have been linked to an Amazon warehouse in Gourock and M&D Green pharmacy in Port Glasgow, both Inverclyde.Individuals, who may have been infectious at the time, were said to have visited a number of businesses. These included The Botany bar and restaurant in Glasgow and a boat trip with Sweeney’s Cruises in West Dunbartonshire, both on Sunday.Individuals also visited The Queen of the Loch by Marston’s Inn in Balloch and Lomond Woods Holiday Park on the weekend of July 24.None of the cases are experiencing anything but mild symptoms, NHSGGC said. All of the businesses linked to the outbreak are continuing to operate.Dr Daniel Carter, consultant in public health medicine and chairman of the incident management team dealing with the cluster, said: “All those who have tested positive for Covid-19 have been given appropriate advice and are self-isolating.“We are working with a number of businesses including a local pharmacy to trace any close contacts.”He added that anyone who has been in any of the businesses involved should should “stay vigilant and alert to any symptoms suggestive of Covid-19”.Dr Linda de Caestecker, director of public health at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: “Everyone who may have been exposed to these cases is being followed up and given appropriate advice.“We want to reassure community experiencing a spike in Covid-19 cases are being advised to minimise contact with people outside their own household for 14 days and avoid indoor hospitality.People who have already travelled to the affected areas are being advised they do not need to return to Scotland early.Sturgeon said: “I’m grateful to the Prime Minister for the update on the recent developments in the North West of England and all four nations agreed on the importance of sharing localised information as we work together to continue to supress the virus.“We have always been clear that localised flare ups are likely as we continue to supress the virus but by responding quickly and appropriately we can limit the effect these have on wider transmission.“I strongly advise anyone planning to travel to areas affected in the north of England, or anyone planning to travel to Scotland from those same areas, to cancel their plans.”The new rules in the affected areas of northern England ban members of different households from mixing in pubs, restaurants and other hospitality venues – although businesses will remain open for those visiting individually or from the same household. The Office for National Statistics said see outbreaks, we’re dealing with an outbreak in Greater Glasgow and Clyde right now, so we will all see these challenges.“I think there is a concern in England that there is perhaps an increase in general community transmission in parts of the country and again we must be vigilant about that.“We are seeing plenty of warnings right now from the UK – England in particular – but we shouldn’t be complacent, and plenty of warnings from across Europe that Covid has not gone away and it may be on the rise again and it presents a real risk to health and wellbeing.”Sturgeon said the Scottish Government’s decision-making is driven by its objective to eliminate Covid-19.“We don’t do this lightly.
