Gared joined the Watch as a boy and been a ranger for forty years. Had less ears than me, that one. The old man warmed his hands before the fire. Will was a poacher caught by Lord Mallister and chose the wall over losing his hand. How did Gared survive? Now that we're more familiar with those Rangers again, let's address the most simple explanation, that it was an accidental meeting between the Others and the rangers. Their attempt to kill Jeor Mormont and Jeremy Rykker, they entrust this mission with two wights. Lord Yohn Royce, also known as "Bronze Yohn", is the Lord of Runestone and a very loyal, powerful bannerman of House Arryn and formerly, of House Stark. He has horses, but wights can be fast moving and tireless, they'd likely catch up while Gared slept as what happened to Sam and Gilly at Whitetree Village. From these, the only conclusion left is that the whole scenario was not a trap for three Night's Watch rangers, instead a trap for one ranger. "The young knight turned back to his grizzled man-at-arms.
But I'm not sure, so I left it an open question.TL:DR Waymar was identified as looking like a Stark by Craster. The Others show themselves and duel Waymar despite not being above sneaky, puppermaster tactics. The first item is checked off is by Craster, who identifies Waymar correctly as looking like a Stark. The Others took this information and put Waymar through some sort of ritualized test of his swordplay abilities and what kind of sword he owned. What's left is Waymar's appearance (AFFC Alayne I):Grey eyes, slender, graceful. Jon Snow has been dodging death's cold grip for a long time in ASOIAF, but you may not realize how long the Others have been trying to kill him. Time to die, poser.I think it's at least as likely that they were all surrounding him cheering him on and chiding Royce (to show that they are not just animal-like killing machines, but instead very human-like) and they were all holding off to let their buddy 1v1 the person (to show us they have concepts of pride and individuality and identity as warriors/sword fighters) and as soon as his sword is broken, and the fights over They all converge and get it over with.I think the more plausible thing to note is how Royce's blade is covered with frost, and the high pitched keening may be getting worse and worse, as per Will's response to it.The note that the Other's words were mocking seems very far away from any other magical incantations we have seen.Hm, I had the same thought as you, but my guess would have been that they were expecting his blood to smoke - when it did not, they knew he could not be Azor Ahai.nice, enjoyed the take.. and I could see any of your last few points being true. And, not to toot my own horn, but this is the most convincing explanation for what may have happened to Benjen I've seen. Frost-fallen leaves whispered past them, and Royce's destrier moved restlessly. But there is the problem of communication, not sure how a Crow would communicate with the Others. He probably thought Will made it up so they could return to the wall. After reading what Jeor said about giving Waymar command because of Waymars father gives a little context as to why Waymar was even in this position. There's no communication between them before the descend on the bleeding ranger, they all understand that Waymar is not their target and they as one run their swords through him. His disappearance is the biggest missing puzzle piece from all this. Somewhere in between, they stop at Craster's Keep for at least a night.
And Will is a veteran ranger, someone Craster probably would've met before, but leaves him out entirely. Fallen, like.
It could just be that the Others have scouts and spies watching the rangers, and one of them ID'd Waymar as a potential threat/chosen one/whatever it is they were looking for. That is a consequence on the story going forwards, finding out what happened to Benjen will definitively give a timeline and the direct motive for the Others.
You slipped up, Craster!I'm unsure if he's lying. "Now I hear he got no head neither. He could've learned Waymar was from House Royce and the Vale. Also some point about the moments before Jon kills his first Walker. So, where did he hear that Gared lost his head? Will said they must have frozen but Waymar said they could not have froze if the wall was weeping. Just seeing him cut down quickly then a cut to guys running in the woods was neat to get things moving but to see him actually fight and hear the line "Come, Dance with me then!" He snagged a roasted onion, dripping brown with gravy, from a nearby trencher and bit into it.
